MIDDLE KOLAB PROJECT

It is proposed to construct a barrage across river Kolab about 5 Km downstream of confluence of Jouranallha with Kolab (Latitude 18°-59’-45” N & Longitude 82°-17’ – 12” E ) and upstream of Dumajori village in Koraput district with pond level at 542 m. The catchment area (free) intercepted is 1590 Sq. Km.. A dam is proposed on Kasabal&Moulijorinallah (Latitude 190 57’ 30” N & Longitude 82° 16’ 15 E) small tributaries of Kolab with a FRL of 540m. A flood flow channel of length 2 Km is proposed from the barrage to divert the flood flows of Kolab river into the above proposed reservoir.

Another dam is proposed on Kerajodi, a small tributary of Kolab river near the village Kerapadar (Latitude 180 45’ 34” N & Longitude 82010’ 24” E) with FRL of 528m. A link canal of length 24Km (approx.) will connect the two reservoirs. It is proposed to generate hydropower at a powerhouse proposed near village Kodukugurha (Latitude 180 44” 35” N & Longitude 820 08’ 56” E) as about 268m of gross head is available. As per rough estimates, power generation with installed capacity of 285 MW and annual power generation of 1554 MU is possible.

After Power generation, the powerhouse releases water into Kerajodinallah which will be picked up by a barrage. It is proposed to provide irrigation to an area of about 30000 Ha in Mathili block of Malkangiri district. It is proposed to take up the survey and investigation through outsourcing. Index map is enclosed.

Also, CEA have formulated a project on river Kolab, which is an inter state project. The power benefits shall have to be shared between the co-basin states. More over, the project appears to be coming in lime stone zone. In view of above, the proposal of Middle Kolab Project, now proposed, by W. R. Deptt. can be considered after detail survey and investigations.

TEL INTEGRATED PROJECT

The Tel Integrated Project is a reservoir scheme. It Is located across river Tel at Latitude 820 20’ 00” N and Longitude 190 50’ 00” E 2Km upstream (along the course of river) of the inter state border of Odisha with Chhatishgarh. The catchment area intercepted at the dam site is 550 Sq. Km. It is a Future Project. It will provide irrigation to a CCA of about 4000 Ha. under Tel dam and about 4000 Ha. underBanjari barrage including 2000 Ha. of CCA of existing Phuljhori Minor irrigation project as ascertained on the basis of Toposheet study.

The design flood on the basis of Dicken’ formula (C=45) worked out to 5111 Cumecs. Power generation under a gross head of 180 m may be possible. Index map is enclosed. However, a balance is to be maintained between the Irrigation and Hydro power components at the time of preparation of DPR

LOWER VANSADHARA PROJECTS

The Lower Vansadhara project envisages construction of 58m high & 1700m long dam intercepting a free catchment of 2201 Sq. Km near village Minajhola (Latitude 19° 31’ 00” N & Longitude 83° 44’ 30” E) in Rayagada district. It is proposed to construct a pickup weir with pond level 128m across river Vansadhara near village Barhagurha (Latitude 190 22’ 58” N & Longitude 83° 46’ 00”E) about 6 Km upstream of confluence of Badanala with Vansadhara river.

Power generation is possible as a gross head of 62m is available at the pond created by the pickup weir.

The FRL of Lower Vansadhara is 190m and the MWL is 195m. The flood cushion available between FRL and MWL will help in moderating the flood peak and thereby reducing flood hazards in downstream.

It is proposed to provide irrigation from the pickup weir in both left & right sides of river Vansadhara. Also it is proposed to have a barrage with pond level 120m at a location near village Taramala (Latitude 19° 08’ 30” N & Longitude 83° 54’30” E) across river Sananadi, a tributary of river Vansadhara in the left bank.

The catchment area at Sana nadi barrage site is 415 Sq. Km. The inflows from Sananadi will further help increasing the success rate of the project. This will act as a balancing reservoir. It is proposed to create an irrigation potential of about 31000 Ha of CCA (Kharif – 26350 Ha. & Rabi – 12400 Ha.) inRayagada&Gajapati districts. Index map of Lower Vansadhara project is enclosed.

BALIJORI HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECT

It is proposed to construct a dam across river Baitarani about 1 Km. below confluence of Simnadi with Baitarani river (Latitude 21° 32’ 00” N & Longitude 86° 00’30” E) near village Balijori in the district of Keonjhar. The free catchment area at the proposed Balijon dam site is 1400 Sq. Km. The location of dam site at Balijon is about 40Km downstream of proposed Bhimkund Dam scheme at Rajnagar (proposed ayacut: 36000 Ha in Kharif and 19640 Ha in Rabi). As the Bhimkund project involves submergence of 64 villages (MWL 355m), the R & R becomes expensive for this Irrigation project.

Hence the scope of the project is proposed to be changed & the Bhimkund Dam project is reduced to a barrage project, with Kharif irrigation of 31000 Ha and addition of a Hydel component at Balijori (about 40 km downstream). At Balijori a reservoir is planned at MWL 290m, which would involve submergence of 19 villages only. The area of submergence at FRL is 3840 Ha. The water from Balijori reservoir will be taken to a power house near Baigundi Village (Latitude 21° 26’ 30 N & Longitude 86° 01’ 15” E) through a pressure conduit down to a level of 70m (Thus a gross head of 220 m).

It is possible to generate hydropower with installed capacity of 160 MW and annual generation of 845, MU under the available gross head. The powerhouse release water will join the river and contribute to irrigation through the proposed project of Anandpur barrage downstream. It can provide Rabi irrigation to 20,000 Ha. besidesstabilsing the Kharifayacut of Anandpur barrage due to the storage created at Balijori. It is proposed to take up the survey and investigation through outsourcing. Index map is enclosed.

To provide additional storage, to tap more catchment about 70 sqkm, and to function as forebay dam, a dam with FRL 280m is now proposed on KantamuliNadi. The water from the Balijori reservoir is transferred through a tunnel to Kantamuli reservoir. The water from this reservoir is carried through penstocks down to the proposed power house at Baigundi to generate power.

Also, The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has also formulated the Balijori H.E. project to generate electricity with installed capacity 178 MW under a gross head of about 173m.

It envisages construction of a 130m high composite concrete dam (at a location about 6 Km downstream of the proposed Balijori H.E. Project of W. R. Deptt.) with provision of dykes with FRL 261m, MDDL 225m & norm tail water level 76.49rn. The area coming under reservoir and forests submergence is 1392 Ha. The submergence area includes acquisition of unclassified forests and reserve forest blocks, private land including homesteads in various settlements.

(Paharpur, Bhitramda, Barabhakra, Puranapani, Dalksani and Banamahuladiha). Also the power generation will be less due to less head and less storage capacity.–

How ever the advantages and disadvantages of these two project proposals need to be examined thoroughly and final decision to be taken considering the aspects of submergence and other aspects. Index map is enclosed.

OHPC has taken up the investigation of two cascading HydroElectric Project in place of Balijori H.E. Project namely Bhimkund&Baigundi in the River Baitarani, considering run of the river principle with minimum submergence.

The preparation of Pre feasibility Report (PFR) for the above projects of 66MW capacity is already completed and the preparation of detailed Project Report (DPR) is under progress.

SALKI HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECT

It is proposed to construct a dam across river Salki, about 6.5Km downstream of confluence of Pilasalki near village Gumi (Latitude 20°-33’-20 N & Longitude 84°- 11’- 15 E) in the district of Phulbanl/ Boudh with FRL 470m. The catchment area intercepted at the proposed dam site is 1249 Sq. Km. The water from Salki reservoir will be taken to a powerhouse through 6.2 km long pressure conduit down to a level of 200m to a power house village Sikaora (Latitude 20°-36’-09 N & Longitude 84°-. ll’-l3 E) to generate electricity under a gross head of 270m with installed capacity 125 MW.

Annual power generation upto 842 MU is possible. The powerhouse releases can be used to stabilize the command area of 19800 Ha. underSalki diversion scheme besides providing irrigation during Rabi season to an extent of 8000Ha. At present, the area being irrigated during Kharif is 19890 Ha. and Rabi area is 1500 Ha. underSalki Diversion Scheme. It is proposed to take up the survey and investigation through outsourcing.

KHADAGO PROJECT

The Khadago Project is a reservoir scheme. It is located across river Khadago near village Ghurabali (Latitude 200 24’ 15” N & Longitude 83° 42’15” E) in the district of Kalahandi. The catchment area intercepted at the dam site is 1980 Sq. Km. It is proposed to provide irrigation to a CCA of 45000 Ha. It is a Future Project. The design flood on the basis of Dicken’ formula (C=45) worked out to 13357 cumecs. The FRL of the dam is 260 m. The tail water level is 180m.

Thus a gross head of 80m is available for generation of power. index map of Khadago project is enclosed. However, a balance is to be maintained between the Irrigation and Hydro power components at the time of preparation of DPR.

UTTEI& ROUL INTEGRATED PROJECT

It is proposed to construct a barrage with pond level 300m on river Uttei at a location Latitude 20° 07’ l0” N & Longitude 83° 36’ 20” E. Also it is proposed to construct a dam with FRL 270m on river Uttei near village Gourkhel, (Latitude 20° 10’30” N & Longitude 83° 34’ 05” E) intercepting a catchment area of 460 Sq. Km. Another dam with FRL 340m is proposed on river Buda (Latitude 20° 10’ 20” N & Longitude 83° 38’ 30” E) a tributary of Roul river.

The catchment area intercepted at Buda dam site is 450 Sq. Km. It is proposed to construct two barrages I diversion weirs on river Roul at Latitude 20° 07’ 00” N & Longitude 83° 39’ 40” E and Latitude 20° 10’ 30” N & Longitude 83° 36’ 55” with pond levels 300m and 272m respectively. The total catchment area intercepted at Roul barrage with pond level 272m is 675 sq. Km.

It is proposed to make use of the storage at Buda reservoir to generate electricity near the pond created by Roul barrage with pond level 272m, as a gross head of 68m is available. The powerhouse releases from Buda river and the yields available at Roul barrage site from its own catchment are transferred to Uttei reservoir. Thus the water available from a total catchment area of 675+450+460=1585 sq. km can be utilized to generate power near Uttel dam site under a gross head of about 70m.

It is a Future Project The CCA of this project is about 50000 Ha as ascertained on the ‘basis of Toposheet study. However, a balance is to be maintained between the Irrigation and Hydro power components at the time of preparation of DPR) Index map of Uttei-RouI integrated project is enclosed.
